Cape Otway, Victoria

Cape Otway, situated on the Great Ocean Road past Geelong in the western part of the state, is fast becoming a popular spot for DXers. This site has been responsible for some great Tropical Band Latin activity & Mediumwave catches from Africa, Europe, the USA and South America.

When the dx is not so hot you can always go for a swim or take in some fantastic bush walks through the Otway Ranges.

Due to the extremely rugged coastline, this part of Victoria is well known for its history of shipwrecks. Back in 1993 I can recall sitting in the car at night with Dave Onley, at the end of the 2000 metre beverage antenna, with the wild and windy weather howling outside. It was an eerie feeling to sit and watch the powerful beam from the Cape Otway lighthouse (located several hundred metres down the road) sweeping across the sky every 20 seconds or so.

Due to the introduction of satellite navigation, the lighthouse ceased operation in 1994, and is now open to the public for tours.

Here's a view from the top of the cliffs, looking south. This location has produced some really good results from an antenna run from the top of the cliffs, down to the rocks a couple of hundred feet below.

Another view, looking west: A perfect site for the African antenna
