Marlo, situated approximately 350 km east of Melbourne, is a popular location for Latin American DX on both mediumwave & shortwave. It was "discovered" back in the late 70's by Queensland DXer Chris Martin, and for more than 20 years has been a top site for the elusive South American stations on medium wave. It is also a terrific location for hearing the New Zealand stations, and just about every NZer has been logged from here at one time or another. Strangely though, it is not a good site for hearing North Americans.
Perhaps this is due to the signal path travelling over land between Marlo
and the eastern coast of Australia. When there does happen to be an opening
into the USA, during exceptional propagation conditions, it is usually
the more interesting stations that make it in, that don't seem to be heard
anywhere else. This is possibly due to its extremely southern geographical
location in relation to anywhere else in Australia. The more common West
Coast USA stations that are heard anywhere else just don't make it in from
this location.
You are always likely to see someone at our Point Ricardo listening site around Easter & the Queens Birthday holiday in June. It is also a top location for SpE FM & TV DX into the Pacific during our summer months (December & January). |
